This dissertation project is based on how elements of suspense are generated in film and how suspense can be used as an effective narrative tool for filmmakers. The dissertation explores different established and experimental means of generating suspense in film. The associated video – ‘Betrayal’ – is meant to be a suspenseful short film based on a young man who witnesses a murder and who is intimidated by the people involved in the murder. This project seeks to explore what makes a film suspenseful and how the suspense can be enhanced in a film using the characters, music and supporting visuals.
